Frequently Asked Questions
by Barry M. Smolowitz, Esq. - SCBA Director of Technology

As a member service, the SCBA has offered a free e-mail account to any SCBA member who had applied since 2004. The SCBA will continue to support those SCBA members whom already have an account, however we will no longer accept applications for a new account. The following FAQ's will answer many of the questions you might have about this service.

Why are we no longer opening of new accounts?
When we initially implemented this member service, only 30 percent of our members had an active email account. Today over 95 percent of our members have an active email account. We have determined that there is no longer a need for this web mail service.

What are the advantages to this account?
You will have a passthrough email address that has the law related domain @suffolklaw.net at no charge.

What are some of the other advantages?
Some of the other advantages are portability. What this means is that you can now have a permanent law related e-mail address (at no charge). You will no longer be required to change your address from an @aol.com to an @optonline.net. You can keep your address knowing that it will be hosted for free as a member benefit.

 Accessibility?
Your email account may be setup in any email client such as Outlook, In addition, the system includes a web based email interface which allow you to retrieve and send email from any web browser anywhere in the world, so long as you have access to a computer which can access the Internet.

 What are the limitations?
While you may use this account as your main email, it is not recommended as space is limited to 25 megabytes. It is best used as a passthrough account. In addition, users must insure that old or read emails are regularly deleted so as not to exceed the 25 MB quota.

What settings do I need to use my e-mail account from an program like Outlook?
SuffolkLaw.Net supports e-mail access via both the POP3 and IMAP mail protocols. The steps to setting up your particular program will vary, but the following are all the relevant settings you will need to know, in addition to your password:
